Kurds love to eat. And spend a lot of time preparing the food. So there isn’t only one thing to eat at the table; but a lot of other things are served alongside the main dish! We do eat a lot of greens. Served at any lunch or dinner is spring onions! For soup, dolma, lachmacun, köfte… literally any dish! It’s another staple in the Kurdish cuisine for sure! Other commonly eaten things alongside main dishes are either caciq (Kurdish tzatsiki) or a salad (normal mixed salad or vegetables), parsley and cut onion (in quarters).

The Kurdish breakfast

Like all meals, the breakfast is as hearty and full of different things to eat. There is loads of vegetables, dairy, fruits, jams and – of course – the carbohydrates! It is eaten quite early in the morning, all together, starting the day of with a happy tummy!

The more common commercial breakfast is not at all common here. Cornflakes, sandwiches, pancakes, oatmeal, smoothies, weetabix, or pastries are not at all common in Kurdistan. It is not even something commonly found in their fridge. It is a big meal with lots to choose between. Here are some of the common things found at the breakfast table:
